Synopsis:
In response to an invitation from Orbona Atrata scholae Criamonis, five young magi take ship from Athens to the covenant of Ai Strati, on the Aegean isle of Lemnos. Acquaintances are made, and prospects discussed. After their arrival, the magi meet with Orbona, who asks that they travel to Egypt to found a new covenant and seek "a city of giants, a city of twilight." Despite their reservations, they accept the proposal. A comet is sighted in the southern sky.
The next day, the magi negotiate loans of books and vis from Ai Strati's librarian, Pyropus, and contemplate possible covenant sites. Come evening, they are escorted from the covenant by Fragor scholae Flambonis, who warns them not to become involved in the feud between the Roman and Reconquista factions. Bidding farewell to the island, the magi board ship once more, traveling southward to Alexandria and an unknown destiny.
